How to look after leather?
Cleaning, stain removal, repairing cracks and tears etc.
Leather care is a science starting with the type of skin/hide, tanning process, dyes and finishing process used. Add to this the leather has been produced for a specific use you can start to understand why there are so many leather care products on the market.
Leather is an organic material that will degrade over time depending on the finish. In order to minimise the deterioration of leather keep out of direct sunlight for extended periods away from heat sources, radiators etc., keep dry and in a temperate climate as much as possible.
There will be times when the leather will need cleaning and possibly conditioning.
With modern furniture, car interiors, saddlery, handbags, wallets, purses and leather clothing the manufacturer or business where it was purchased will have recommended product, often their own . I advise you to use these as they are designed especially for that item. Some products can have an adverse reaction and ruin the leather so please take care to do a test patch before using any product just to make sure.
With older leather items it becomes more difficult, as often the business is no longer trading . This is where it’s advisable to contact a leather expert in your area so they can inspect the leather in person. We have a very good range of leather experts in the UK, some can be found on the useful links page. I have also found the small independent business’s such as shoe repairers are very well versed in helping and repairing all things leather . You’d be supporting them too which is another plus.
If the leather is aged and of historical importance then a leather conservator is needed. These specialists have trained in the preservation of old leather and are a valued group in such an ancient craft.
